Dogs often bring unexpected joy and character to stories, and in my first historical romance novel, A Widow's Whim, the dog named Bobo adds a unique charm that readers have come to love. Bobo’s character is not just a product of imagination but inspired by a real dog with an unforgettable personality. This post shares the delightful story behind Bobo’s creation, the real-life adventures that shaped him, and how such a quirky companion enriches storytelling.

The Real Bobo: A Dog with a Unique Habit

Decades ago, in the small town of Etna, California, Don and Sandra Murphy owned a dog who was anything but ordinary. This dog had a habit of flopping down and falling asleep in the most unexpected places. Whether it was in shop doorways, on the sidewalk, or even right in the middle of a church service, this dog seemed to find the perfect spot to take a nap without a care in the world.

This behavior was not just amusing but also heartwarming. It showed a dog completely at ease with his surroundings, unbothered by the hustle and bustle of daily life. The dog’s carefree attitude and quirky sleeping spots made him a beloved figure in the community. His presence brought smiles and a sense of calm to those who encountered him.

Bringing Bobo to Life in A Widow’s Whim

When I began writing A Widow’s Whim, I wanted to include a character that would add warmth and a touch of humor to the story. This real-life dog from Etna inspired Bobo’s character perfectly. I imagined Bobo as a loyal companion who, much like his real counterpart, had a knack for finding the oddest places to rest.

In the novel, Bobo’s antics serve multiple purposes:

  • Lightening the mood during tense or emotional scenes

  • Showing the softer side of the main characters through their interactions with him

  • Adding humor to dramatically tense situations

Bobo’s presence helps readers connect with the story on a more personal level. His quirky behavior makes him memorable and adds a layer of realism that enriches the narrative.

Final Thoughts

For readers and writers alike, Bobo’s tale is a reminder to look for inspiration in the world around us. Real-life stories, no matter how small or quirky, can become the heart of unforgettable characters.
